STATEMENT ON DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
We at Cal UPHC are frustrated and heartbroken by the tragic deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and countless other Black lives lost to police brutality and senseless violence. We stand in solidarity with the Black community and encourage our organization members and the greater public health community to seek ways to strengthen their allyship.
As the leading undergraduate public health organization at UC Berkeley, we must acknowledge how systemic racism not only impacts our nation’s law enforcement and criminal justice system but also the public health, conservation, and public policy spaces with which we directly work in.
At Cal UPHC, we value diversity in race, ethnicity, gender, culture, sexual orientation, immigration status, socioeconomic background, and disability status in our organization. It is crucial that our future leaders in public health share the experiences and cultural understandings of the people that public health policies and institutions are meant to serve.
Cal UPHC leads with empathy and inclusion in order to uphold our principles of community, our passion for critical inquiry, debate, discovery and innovation, and our deep commitment to contributing to a healthier and more equitable world.
